Scope of Work

For summer 2021, capital planning is planning to proceed with the welcoming and secure main entrance, media center remodel, chiller replacement, and ceiling replacement. 

Project Updates: 

August 2, 2020: Construction is progressing rapidly to prepare the safe and welcoming entrance, ceiling replacement, media center updates, and chiller replacement for the start of the school year. Contractors have finishes in place in the office area and are on schedule to complete the work for staff arrival in August.

March 18, 2021: 

  • The original project included a 4,800 square foot kitchen and cafeteria addition and remodeling 4,000 square feet of the existing main office and media center, chiller replacement, ceiling tile replacement, and loading dock improvements.
  • The project was initially designed in 2014 and funding was pulled shortly before it was to be bid due to budget shortfalls. The work was funded in the FY18 bonding cycle and design work began in spring, 2019. In late summer 2019 the District paused design to ensure scope was aligned with funding sources. The decision was made to proceed with the building as designed in fall, 2019, too late to bid it and have it built in summer 2020.
  • The addition as bid was designed in summer 2020 and bids were received on November 19, 2020. The contractor was selected through the Best Value Procurement process and their contract went before the Board of Education in January, 2021.
  • The addition passed City of Minneapolis Zoning requirements one day before the contract was presented to the Board of Education. Although the work passed the Planning Commission, there was still more than one month of follow up work between the City and the Architect to finalized design details before the building permit process could begin. The building permit was submitted the first week of March.
  • The new building codes require any additions to an existing school building have, as part of the construction, a Storm Shelter. In Minnesota, this means the addition will need to resist tornadic winds of 250 mph. Normal construction and previous construction costing does not account for this. The design team determined that adding storm shelter design requirements would add significant cost that will exceed the existing construction budget at Wenonah. The design team did apply for a more favorable interpretation of this new code requirement to allow the project to go forward within budget, which was denied by the City of Minneapolis code officials on March 11, 2021.
  • For summer 2021, capital planning is planning to proceed with the welcoming and secure main entrance, media center remodel, chiller replacement, and ceiling replacement. The future of the kitchen / cafeteria project will need to be determined as it would require that more budget be allocated to the work of capital investment and determination of the impact the new building code / storm shelter requirements would have on the addition as designed, and what modifications would be necessary to meet the new code requirements.

January 27, 2021: Sheehy Construction has been selected to be the General Contractor for the Wenonah Elementary School addition and remodeling. The tentative construction schedule is April 1 through December 31, 2021. Interior work will not begin before the last day of instruction. 

June 4, 2020: Site work is beginning at Wenonah. This summer we plan on the following improvements:

  • New monument sign with electronic marquis at the main entrance
  • New sloped walkway to make the main entrance ADA accessible
  • Removal of about half of the asphalt on the south side of the building
  • Replacement with turf to increase the play area
  • Addition of a fence between the new turf and existing asphalt area

We anticipate completion of this work in late summer.  

April 2020: Summer 2020 work has successfully bid and is awaiting mobilization. Summer 21/22 work is in the design phase. 

August 16, 2019: Final scope continues to be worked on. Project design kick-off will be delayed. 

July 16, 2019: Final scope is being worked on. Next steps will be the project design kickoff. 

April 12, 2019: Bids will take place November 2019 and construction will be Summer 2020
